A star that shines only among friends

I love this dress. But, for some reason, only when its paired with some other pieces. I tried it on once without tights, boots and a topper, and didn’t like it nearly as much. But it shines when its surrounded by wardrobe friends.

(dress also seen in my Latte photo shoot with Anni from last spring)

Merry Christmas to you!

on a side note: It seems like every year there is a big discussion on social media about the PC-ness of wintery greetings. I’m sharing Christmas greetings, because that’s the holiday I celebrate. Please feel free to wish me a happy holidays, happy Hanukkah, merry Kwanza, or happy new year - I won’t be offended.

How necessary is belting?

The structure of this jacket makes me that I feel like I’m trying to hide something in the belly area. So I buttoned it up and belted it for some more definition in my waist, to prove I’m not. But now that I’m looking at it a few days later, I’m thinking it might just be awkward.

I have to admit, I’ve been a little tempted by the fashion blogger tendency to over-belt. One very popular fashion blogger I used to follow [whom I won’t mention by name] belts excessively. Like, epidemically. When I started noticing it, I looked back in her archives and something like 90% of her outfits were belted, when maybe only 50% could have or should have been.

Why do we do this? A need to emphasize our tiny waists? Or over-accessorize our outfits? or show off all the different ways we can knot thrifted, boys’ belts that are too big for us?

Maybe my New Year’s fashion resolution will be to stop relying on belting my outfits.

(I’m kidding, I don’t make New Year’s fashion resolutions) (I think)

More crappy flash indoor photos. But I like this outfit so I’m suffering through them. This ensemble was lightly patterned after this outfit:

Berry Happy

You know winter’s arrived when the knitting needles break out. I started knitting again for the season (Yes, I only knit in the fall/winter) when I was sick a couple weeks ago and watching Gossip Girl for hours on end.

This cowl neck scarf is something I’d been wanting to create for a while but I couldn’t find a pattern that didn’t require a round knitting needle. So I made an estimate and started going, and finished it off last night! I looove the color.

I also found this lipstick the other week that I’ve had for months but never wore - and it matched perfectly!

map of the [blog] world with Target

If you follow me on Latte Love, you may have seen my announcement today about the launch of Blogger Map Project. It’s a map to connect bloggers all over the world. You can read more about it in my post here: http://www.latteloveblog.com/2011/12/400-posts-blogger-map.html

I hope you’ll consider joining. (Another great resource for blogger locations is Rose A La Mode’s Style Blogger Map.)

Now, on to the important stuff - my clothes. And an unintentional reveal of half of my living room.

E reluctantly kindly agreed to take the past few days of outfit photos in our living room because of the early sun set and my lateness in the morning.

If you would, please ignore the photo of the Rialto Square bridge in Venice. That photo has been leaning against the wall un-hung for over two years because I can’t decide if I like it or not or whether to put it 6 or 12 inches above the mantle. My life is full of difficult decisions and hanging the Rialto Square Bridge is one of the hardest.

wearing:

dress: Target (last week)
necklace: Target (two years ago)
tights: Target (last winter)
pumps: Target (last month)

I am obsessed with the dress. E was going to get me the orange one for Christmas and then they were all sold out. I was pitying myself reading the reviews for the dress and I realized that based onthe review, an XS might fit me better. Then I realized that this blue shade was the only XS color left so I immediately ordered it for myself and then told E what he bought me. Merry Christmas!

As far as sizing for this goes - I normally wear a S/4 at Target and most other places. I am slightly pear-shaped. Happily the fit of this dress is slightly more generous around the hips and I’m so glad I got an XS.

[EDIT: you can still find these skinny red pants from Kohls in a few sizes for $16!]

I was running a little late so these pictures were taken in the breezeway between house and garage - where you can see the lighting is pretty wonky at 7:30am.

I wore this scarf as a fuzzy alternative to that awesome hat in the inspiration photo. I secretly have my eye on this hat from UO in case we ever move to a cold enough climate where I could wear it. Although SoCal’s been awfully cold at nights this week. I had to break out my Starbucks card to scrape off the layer of frost on my windshield this morning. Kind of nostalgic for Chicago winters (except…not. at all.)

striped t: Target
blazer: Old Navy
red pants: Lauren Conrad for Kohls
moccasins: Target
scarf: Made by my grandma about 7 Christmases ago

Today I’m linking up with Erica, Kayla and Amy for their weekly Open to Interpretation

December 3rd

After being sick all week I was dying to get out of the house - even though I still wasn’t feeling 100% (and waaay overdid it). I wore this to my saturday a.m. Bible study, a ladies’ Christmas brunch, and then a bridal shower - all back to back!

I snagged this dress at a consignment shop in Pasadena, Crossroads Trading Co. Needs to be taken in a lot on the sides, but I just safety pinned it and wore a cardigan for now.

I really struggled putting this outfit together, because a vision for how I wanted to wear it, but didn’t have the pieces I really wanted to make it work.

In an ideal world - this is how I would have styled it.

Are these colors a little too My Little Pony? E thinks these tights are a little wild (*raawr*). I thought purple leopard was just up my alley.

can you tell I’ve been sick all week? Sweats x 5 days does not good style blogging make. I wore this before I crawled into bed for the rest of the week.
